The publication documents the exhibition Pathways to Unknown Worlds: Sun Ra, El Saturn & Chicago’s Afro-Futurist Underground, 1954-68 at Hyde Park Art Center. The exhibition featured a diverse, brilliant, provocative, and by-and-large never seen range of materials related to pianist, bandleader, mystic, philosopher, and Afro-Futurist Sun Ra. This publication offers a selection of rare material and documents the ways in which graphics and design were essential to Ra’s philosophy as well as how his legacy has paved the way for a new generation of artists to explore the concepts of time and space. The publication features an introduction by the show’s curators, John Corbett, Anthony Elms, and Terri Kapsalis, as well as writings by Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Robert L. Campbell, Kevin Whitehead, Graham Lock, Victor Margolin, Phil T. Cohran, Kerry James Marshall, Calvin Forbes, Malik Gaines, Karl Erickson,and Glenn Ligon.
